OpenFactory a resounding success

The IUCr-UNESCO OpenFactory took place from 10 to 19 September with the sponsorship and active participation of STOE, DECTRIS and Xenocs. It involved 20 young scientists from 15 different countries, some of whom had come from the immensely successful First European Crystallography School in Pavia a few days before. The delegates, chosen from a high number of initial applicants, met first at the STOE Headquarters in Darmstadt for the Opening Ceremony and introductory lecture by DECTRIS staff. Over the course of the next 10 days, sessions in Grenoble were held at Xenocs Headquarters, gaining experience with Xenocs sources and optics, and using Xenocs SAXS/WAXS systems; and at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, including a visit to the ID02 SAXS beamline. Back in Darmstadt, the participants were trained in single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, using STOE diffractometers, and then joined the STOE Single Crystal Users' Meeting. A highlight of the meeting was a keynote talk by Professor Gautam Desiraju, IUCr Immediate Past President, on the topic "100 years of Crystallography: Seen through 15 small molecule crystal structures". More information about the OpenFactory can be found in a STOE Press Release and in a recent article in Wiley's ChemViews Magazine.
