Event Name An experiment on crystallography
Start Date 4th Mar 2014 9:00am
End Date 30th Nov 2014 4:00pm
Duration 271 days and 7 hours
Description

Many initiatives have been and are being organized to involve schoolchildren at Mudaliarpet, Pondicherry (India) into crystallography on the occasion of IYCr2014.

1. At first, the students were given a brief introduction on various crystals, which made them think about how crystals are formed.

2. Following this, a team of students were selected for a project on Crystal Growth - investigating the size, shape and number of crystals formed, taking various substances such as table salt, sugar, epsom salt, borax, potassium nitrate and alum.

3. A Radio Talk was given by the teacher and the students on the "International Year of Crystallography".

4. A lecture was given on the topic to the school students, following which a demonstration -cum- exhibition, along with a poster presentation by the teacher is to be arranged for view for the public around the school locale.

5. A next attempt to telecast the above in the television is made.

6. Students of our school are participating in the IYCr2014 Crystal Growing Competition.

Event Name Plenary Lecture at the first SGI-SIMP meeting
Start Date 10th Sep 2014
End Date 12th Sep 2014
Duration 3 days
Description

To celebrate the International Year of Crystallography, the joint Congress of the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology and the Italian Geological Society (Milan, 10-12 September 2014) will feature a plenary lecture on 'One hundred years of mineral crystal chemistry' by Prof Stefano Merlino (U. Pisa).

SIMP-SGI-meeting

Abstract of the lecture

After the epochal experience of Friedrich and Knipping suggested and interpreted by Laue, the scene rapidly moved to England where the young Bragg correctly explained the results of the Munich discovery and showed how to use X-rays to determine the arrangement of atoms in crystals and, in few years, actually derived the structures of several inorganic compounds. Their comparison permitted Bragg to assert that crystals are composed of ‘‘inelastic spheres in contact’’ and that ‘‘it is possible to assign to the sphere representing an atom… a constant diameter.’’ The development of these concepts by various authors (Wasastjerna, Goldschmidt, …) led to the well-known Table of ionic radii by Pauling, who - at the same time - proposed the rules for the stability of ionic compounds, based on the concept of coordination polyhedra as building elementary modules of inorganic compounds. The stability rules of Pauling, as well as the conception, formulated by Bragg, of the structures of complex oxides as characterized by ‘close packing’ of oxygen anions, were the main guiding lines in the ‘trial and error’ procedures to determine the atomic arrangements in minerals and in inorganic compounds in general. The increasing number of known structures raised the need for proper classification schemes, largely based on elementary structural units (as the silicon tetrahedra in silicates) and the various ways of their connection. At the same time the wide basis of structural data and the increased precision and accuracy of those data stimulated the revision of the old compilations of ionic radii as well as a re-formulation of the Pauling’s rule of valence-bond balance. Examples are presented of the application of the crystal chemical concepts to some important mineralogical, geochemical and geophysical problems. An explosive growth of structural knowledge in the last decades of the twentieth century was stimulated by the new techniques of data collection, the high speed of computing and the advent of direct methods of structure solution, which resulted not only in an enormous increase in the number of known structures, but also in unraveling very complex arrangements. This increasing structural knowledge accompanied and stimulated the development of a new way to look at the arrangements of inorganic compounds, based on their modular aspects. The concept of assembling different, geometrically compatible modules, mainly structural layers, to build up complex structures has been very productive; in fact it not only consented a deep knowledge of the structural relationships inside wide families of natural and synthetic compounds, but also favored the solution of complex structural problems and permitted careful previsions of new possible structural arrangements. Few lines of future developments of the crystal chemical study of minerals are briefly presented and discussed: ‘synergy’ between mineralogists and material chemists; computational simulations of structural arrangements; new experimental approach through automated electron diffraction tomography.

Event Name 2nd Joint AIC-SILS conference
Start Date 15th Sep 2014
End Date 18th Sep 2014
Duration 4 days
Description We are pleased to announce that in 2014, the International Year of Crystallography, the second joint conference of the Italian Crystallographic Association (AIC) and of the Italian Synchrotron Radiation Society (SILS) will be held in Florence.
Florence

An ancient tradition links the study of crystallography to this city, which during the sixteenth century saw the Medici family attracting on the banks of the Arno river Nicolas Steno, who stated the first law of crystallography. In the same period the Medici started to collect some crystalline specimens, first nucleus of one of the most precious and ancient collections of natural crystals.

The program selected by the Scientific and Organizing committees is thought to support the participation and contacts between members of the two groups involved, enabling the exchange of ideas in scientific fields (such as crystal growth, methods and techniques for structure determination, molecular recognition, polymer and material science, molecular medicine and structural biology), different and sometimes seemingly distant, but all associated with crystallography.

Thus, a hundred years after the international awards for the fundamental importance of studing matter by means of crystals, we are confident that Florence, the cradle of Renaissance ideas, will be the venue in which scientists from different fields will innovate and find stimuli for growth and collaboration.

Duration 122 days and 1 hour
Description

The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History proudly announces its upcoming exhibition: CRYSTALLOGRAPHY: Where Art & Science Collide, on display from September 18, 2014 –January 17, 2015.

On Thursday, September 18th, at 6 PM, a free public lecture featuring David Gardner, Master Jeweler and Gemologist, was followed by an open reception with refreshments and gallery viewing.

[exhibition postcard]

This year marks the centenary of the birth of modern crystallography, a science studying the composition and structure of crystals. Crystallographers provide fundamental knowledge and technology essential for the development of new materials.

Crystallography has become the very core of structural science, revealing the structure of DNA, allowing us to understand and fabricate computer memories, showing us how proteins are created in cells, and helping scientists to design powerful new materials and drugs. It permeates our daily lives and is essential in agro-food, aeronautics, automobiles, cosmetics, and computers, as well as the electro-mechanical, pharmaceutical and mining industries. Because of the beauty and symmetry of crystals, they also figure prominently in architecture, art forms, and jewelry.

This exhibition will offer visitors an overview of the many applications of the science of crystallography. Materials on display will include stunning specimens from the Museum’s extensive mineral collection and will showcase examples of crystals used in art and jewelry.

This exhibit was made possible in part through Hotel Tax Revenue funded from the City of College Station through the Arts Council of Brazos Valley and through David Gardner’s Jewelers. The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History is committed to promoting science, and cultural and natural history with the integration of art in exhibits and educational programs.

The Museum is open to visitors Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am-5 pm. For more information about this adult program, exhibits and other displays, events, programs and activities, please contact the Museum at 979-776-2195, visit us on the web at www.brazosvalleymuseum.org, or follow us on Facebook.

Golden year celebrations
International Year of Crystallography 2014, IYCr2014

Department of Physics, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.

Workshop on “Elemental, compound and phase analysis by powder X-ray diffraction”, 19-20th Sept. 2014

From ancient times, crystals have become one of the attractive materials due to their surface morphology, sparkles and colors. The discovery of X-ray diffraction from crystals by Max Von Laue helped to understand atomic/molecular structures and physical properties of them. Max Von Laue was awarded Noble prize in 1914 for his discovery. Now the year 2014 is celebrated as 100th anniversary of crystallography. To commemorate the International Year of Crystallography 2014, this workshop is organized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction methods are widely used for studying structure and physical properties of crystalline materials. Powder X-ray diffraction (Powder XRD) could be used when the material sizes are very small (less than mm). Recently, Nanoscience has become one of the emerging field and lot of nanomaterials are synthesized. Powder XRD has become one of important characterization tool for finding phase and size of nanoparticles. Many post graduate and research students do research work in nanomaterials. The workshop aims at to impart knowledge to participants on element, compound and phase analysis of samples by powder X-ray diffraction. The workshop includes expert lectures, tutorials, X-ray lab visit and powder X-ray diffraction demonstration. Organizers : Prof. D. Sastikumar Dr. M. Ashok

Event Name Public Seminar in Celebration of the International Year of Crystallography
Start Date 19th Sep 2014 3:00pm
End Date
Duration N/A
Description
The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) in partnership with UNESCO, hosted a public seminar in celebration of the International Year of Crystallography at the Geological Survey in Windhoek. The aim of the seminar was to increase public awareness of the way in which crystallography underpins most of the technological developments in modern society but also its role in cultural heritage and art history, The International Year of Crystallography commemorates the centennial of the birth of X-ray crystallography, thanks to the work of Max von Laue and William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg. The year 2014 also commemorates the 50th anniversary of another Nobel Prize, that awarded to Dorothy Hodgkin for her work on vitamin B12 and penicillin.

Even though crystallography underpins all the sciences today, it remains relatively unknown to the general public. One aim of the Year is to promote education and public awareness through a variety of activities, such as the public seminar.

The NCRST as a the national agency responsible for the coordination and promotion of research, science, technology and innovation, together with UNESCO organised this event to show how crystallography can assist in reducing extreme poverty and hunger, improving access to clean water and safe sanitation, curbing child mortality and improving maternal health, among other challenges.

“There is a need to broaden the base of crystallography, in order to give more developing countries expertise in this critical field for their scientific and industrial development. This is all the more urgent in that crystallography will play a key role in the transition to sustainable development in coming decades”, said Dr Eino Mvula, Chief Executive Officer of the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology.

Description

To celebrate IYCr2014, the Egyptian National Committee of Crystallography (ENCC) in Cooparation with the Egyptian Society of Crystallography and its Applications (ESCA) organize a Symposium on Structural Role of Crystallography in Pharmacological Sciences.

Objectives

The process of curing a disease starts with identifying its target protein that is considered a building block in a wide range of pharmacological applications. With the three-dimensional structures of both the target protein and the appropriate medicinal compounds, extensive information can be combined to help developing better drugs. X-ray crystallography comprises the most important technique for determining the 3D-structures, and it plays a major role to identify the active conformation adopted by a protein excluding the inactive one(s). This symposium focuses on the powerful contribution of Crystallography in the field of Pharmacology, by shedding light on the basic concepts and approaches.

Description

You cannot fit Science in one box? Think again! Logix Creative and Daaa Haus have been entrusted with the conceptualisation, design and fabrication of the science installation in Pjazza St George during the Science In The City 2014 and Notte Bianca 2014 happenings on Saturday 26th September and Saturday 4th October 2014 respectively - and, judging from the blue prints, they have done just that!

Introducing AMAZE2: a massive installation in the shape of a giant cube housing a maze that plans to portray the various elements of science in a fun and eclectic way. The Installation, a journey through various rooms arranged as a full size maze, will take the visitor through various representations and interactive exhibits of science. From the weather to the big bang, from the earth to the human body, from solar energy to renewable energy, no stone will be left unturned. Logix/Daaa are also thinking outside the box – literally, as around the installation various exhibits featuring Lufthansa, with an array of interactive displays designed to experience the science around flight engineering, a car manufacturer displaying a fleet of EV vehicles and a Beer manufacturer sponsoring a Beer Haus experiment bar will offer patrons tons of entertainment while they warm up before cooling down after the experience of the AMAZE2 cube.

This cube will contain a tech-biogarden where the audience can play with devices and make their own sounds with the living systems. An art installation by IZAXA in collaboration with biochemist Rosalin Bonetta, Laboratory of Biochemistry and Protein Science (Dept. of Physiology and Biochemistry, University of Malta), under the supervision of Professor G. Hunter and Dr T. Hunter, invites participants to celebrate the 100th anniversary since the start of X-ray Crystallography. Another area will house artefacts inspired by the CERN particle accelerator that's trying to explain the wonders of the Universe.

AMAZE2 will offer visitors of all ages an accessible exhibition of educational displays that puts science in their hands. With the aid of Science in the City Consortium, Notte Bianca, Biopilot, Izaxa and V.18 Logix/Daaa will fit Science in the box and mix it with art and culture to form an epic assault on the senses. Everyone will be truly AMAZED – squared.
