Description

SYMMETRY AND THE TWO-DIMENSIONAL SPACE GROUPS

This lecture introduces fundamental concepts of crystallography. Isometries and compositions of the isometries of the plane are discussed first. A geometric “proof” of the crystallographic restriction follows. Then the 17 crystallographic wallpaper groups will be described.

Some mathematics is discussed but the lecture is intended for a general audience.

8:00 - 9:30 a.m., Silliman University MPR

ORIGAMI CRYSTALS: MATH AND ART

This is an introductory survey to classical and modern origami designs that have close connections to crystallography (e.g., origami polyhedra, tessellations, etc.). The lecture also explores how scientific origami research might intersect with crystallography.

A folding session on modular origami construction follows the presentation.

9:30 - 11:00 a.m., Silliman University MPR

The lectures coincide with the 113th Founders Day celebration of Silliman University.
