Participant biographies

grd Gautam R. Desiraju (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India) is a structural chemist who has played a major role in the development and growth of crystal engineering. Professor Desiraju has authored around 375 publications and been recognized by awards such as the Alexander von Humboldt Forschungspreis and the TWAS (Third World Academy of Sciences) Prize in Chemistry. He was elected President of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) for the triennium 2011–2014, and is one of the Main Editors of IUCrJ, the IUCr’s new open-access journal.
[Irina Bokova] Irina Bokova has been Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 2009. She is the first woman to head UNESCO.  Ms Bokova is a former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and Coordinator of Bulgaria-European Union relations (1995-1997). She has always promoted European integration, including as Minister for Foreign Affairs and as Chair and founding member of the European Policy Forum.
[Georgina Ferry]

Georgina Ferry is a science writer and broadcaster based in Oxford, UK. She is the author of biographies including Dorothy Hodgkin: A Life (Granta, 1998) and Max Perutz and the Secret of Life (Chatto, 2007). For Hodgkin’s centenary in 2010 she wrote and produced a one-woman play, Hidden Glory, based on the scientist’s writings.

[Mike Glazer] Mike Glazer (Visiting Professor, U. Warwick; Emeritus Professor of Physics, U. Oxford, UK) became interested in crystals at the age of seven, when he found his first natural mineral. This early interest eventually took him into the field of crystallography. Since then, he has established a reputation for his work on the crystallography of technologically useful crystals and for co-inventing a method to cool small crystals in an open stream.
[Michele Zema] Michele Zema is the Project Manager for IYCr2014 at IUCr, Chester, UK, and lecturer in crystallography in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at U. Pavia, Italy. He is also Chair of the Commission for Crystallographic Teaching of the Italian Crystallographic Association, and has organized several summer schools, including the series "Crystallography beyond diffraction". He is an active researcher in the field of mineralogical crystallography and inorganic crystal chemistry. He is also the author of the IYCr2014 logo.
[Jonathan Agbenyega] Jonathan Agbenyega is the Business Development Manager at IUCr, Chester, UK. Jonathan completed his PhD in Materials Science at the University of Southampton in 1993 and also co-authored a book on Raman spectroscopy published by Wiley during this period. After a brief postdoc position at the Institute of Food Research, Norwich, UK, Jonathan began his career in scientific publishing. Jonathan has worked with leading publishers Wiley, Pearson and, more recently, Elsevier where he was Editor in Chief and Publisher of Materials Today magazine.
